Urban South Brewery Head Brewer Alex Flores and Lead Brewer Eric Epps Talks White Oak
92 Rating - Exceptional
We spoke with Urban South Brewery Head Brewer Alex Flores and Lead Brewer Eric Epps about White Oak.
BC: Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
Alex: This came out of trying an oak-aged IPA with vanilla bean at a beer festival. We thought our New England IPA base would pair well with the vanillin tones from the oak.
BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
Alex: The complexity of the hop profile with the character from the white oak. So much depth, and the aromatics are incredible.
Eric: The wood chip aroma blending with the Citra hops give you a rustic, sweet, hoppy aroma with a smooth, sweet, hoppy finish.
BC: Is this your “desert island beer?”
Alex: This would be a great desert island beer. I would have a few!
Eric: Not my go-to, but I wouldn’t be upset if it was the only beer I had.
BC: Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less?
Alex: Aromatically complex and incredible hop profile.
BC: What’s a good food pairing for this beer?
Alex: This beer goes really well with BBQ and also Thai food!
Eric: Any kind of BBQ meal would pair well, and I would also like a nice chesseburger or ribs. The flavor of the wood chips adds a nice complexity to the grilled meat and adds depth.
