Lake Haze #15 by Wallenpaupack Brewing Co. is a Hazy Double IPA with vanilla and coffee and was judged as a Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer (BJCP sub-style 30A). It poured light orange and rather murky into the glass, forming a thin white head with moderate retention. The aroma led off with intense coffee notes followed by juicy fruity tropical ones seemingly from the choice of hop varietals rather than the addition of fruit. There was not much noticeable vanilla or alcohol warmth on the nose. Dominant flavors were from coffee foremost, secondarily from added vanilla, and the same hop esters sensed in the aroma, and finally the malted barley, which formed the bulk of the grain bill. The malt element balanced out but did not overtake the flavor hops. The mouthfeel included a distinct alcohol warmth, relatively low carbonation and residual but pleasing coffee notes in the finish. This beer’s drinkability is high due to the harmonious blending of its components, including a double IPA’s maltiness and resulting strength. Thanks to the coffee and vanilla contributions, this beer should appeal to a variety of drinkers including those looking for something more than a simple explosive hop bomb in their DIPA.
