Triple Sunshine by Lawson's Finest Liquids is being judged as a Double IPA (22A). The aroma is a little catty or tomato-like, probably from the combination of unique and intensively fruity hop strains. If I try to break the aroma down more, it is predominantly grapefruit and citrus rind with some tropical fruit notes. The malts are sweet-smelling with little complexity, and alcohol is also present in the background. The beer is fairly hazy, golden-orange in color and supports a fine, white head. The flavor is malt-forward, generally sweet with a hint of caramel as you would expect in a strong double IPA beer. There are strong fruit flavors, presumably all from hops and esters, that blend quite well with the malt. Additionally, fairly assertive citrus flavors of juice and bitterness, like you find in a citrus rind, are notable. No doubt there are hops contributing to the overall bitterness that lingers into the finish, continuing to provide balance to the overall strength and malt character of the beer. The malt sweetness lingers and is a little cloying. Hop flavors are complex and complement well with the malt for such a strong beer. The body is quite full and has some warmth from alcohol. A little astringency from intensive hop bitterness or extraction is present. Overall, I find the flavor of this beer to be quite interesting and enjoyable. The aroma is a bit of a challenge, but does little to distract you when you start to get into the flavors. This is a big beer with a ton of everything, including alcohol. I would recommend it as a unique beer to share at the end of a rich meal or special evening.
