I am told Mexican Lager and I think “oh no, another fizzy yellow beer” and am tempted to slam it down faster than a frat boy on spring break. It has the smell and flavors – light corn, floral, faint cracker and hints of apple and it looks the part – brilliant straw, 2” cap, effervescent, but then it hits the palate and you pause and notice. There is an assertive hop bitterness at work that pulls all the Mexican lager flavors together pushing the standard flavors from the ranks of boredom into something excellent, gives them balance and makes the beer work. The beer’s lightness allows the brewer’s subtle hop work to shine through and it does so magnificently. The beer’s lightness and flavor combination make it eminently drinkable. Drink it slow to enjoy the hops. Mexican Lager (International Pale Lager 2A
