Bear Republic Master Brewer Peter Kruger Talks Fastback Racer

We spoke with Bear Republic Master Brewer Peter Kruger about Fastback Racer.

BC: Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
All of our beers are group efforts for our team. That being said, Rob Kent, Head Brewer from our production brewery, spearheaded the creative process.

BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
I really like the way that the tropical/fruity character of the hops (Equinot, Hallertau Blanc, Huell Mellon, and Citra) play so well with the light Crystal and Munich malt sweetness. We wanted to add some edge so the Simcoe hops and the rye malt both bring some edge and spice to the mix.

BC: Where does this beer’s name come from?
The Fastback is a classic-looking car that presents as quite muscular (think Chevy Corvette). This beer really is a liquid equivalent and balances finesse with strength.

BC: Is this your “desert island beer?”
As the alcohol has such a strong presence in this beer, it would have to be an island with a fairly temperate climate. Maybe Devon Island in Canada?

BC: Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less?
Rich, fruity, caramel, warming, delicious. Five to spare.

BC: Do you know a story – or have a personal story – that revolves around this beer?
While I don’t have a story that stands out, I can say that when we put Fastback on at the employee taps, we always end up having many long, interesting and deep conversations.

BC: What's a good food pairing for this beer?
While Double IPAs often have a hard time being paired with dessert, this beer complements any sweet apple-based dessert. Apple pie a la mode, apple crumble or baked apples. You get the idea.
