Funkwerks Co-Founder and Head Brewer Gordon Schuck Talks Raspberry Provincial

Funkwerks Co-Founder and Head Brewer Gordon Schuck

We spoke with Funkwerks, Inc. head brewer and co-founder Gordon Schuck about Raspberry Provincial.

BC: Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
This is my recipe. I wanted to create a refreshing, lower-gravity sour ale that was reminiscent of a Berliner Weiss style, with a Funkwerks spin.

BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
The refreshing tartness and low ABV make it incredibly drinkable.

BC: Where does this beer’s name come from?
The name Provincial harkens back to a time in Belgium when beers were generally lower in alcohol content and typically had a mixed fermentation.

BC: Is this your “desert island beer?”
Raspberry Provincial would be particularly satisfying if I were stranded on a hot desert island because it is delightfully light and refreshing. Best served in a coconut.

BC: Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less?
Tart raspberry wheat beer with a dry effervescent finish.

BC: Do you know a story – or have a personal story – that revolves around this beer?
Raspberry Provincial was originally a test batch of our sessional sour summer ale, Provincial, that didn’t quite hit gravity so we decided to add raspberries. It was so tasty and popular that we decided to recreated it. It has turned out to be one of our best-selling beers.

BC: What's a good food pairing for this beer?
Lemon ricotta pancakes sprinkled with powdered sugar.
