We spoke with Stone Brewing Senior Manager of Brewing & Innovation (Liberty Station) about Buenaveza Salt & Lime Lager.
BC: Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
One of our Production Brewers, Ben Sheehan, while spending time at Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens – Liberty Station.
BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
I love the fact that I can enjoy this beer at any time of the day, weather it be hot or cold outside.
This beer features a clean, crisp flavor with just the right amount of lime and salt (that doesn’t taste fake or overdone) leaving you thirsting for another sip… over and over again.
BC: Where does this beer’s name come from?
The original version brewed at Liberty Station was called Libertad Loma Lager. “Libertad” is “Liberty” in Spanish. Liberty Station is in Point “Loma,” and “Lager” is… a Lager! After everyone raved about how amazing the beer was, it was decided that this beer needed to be moved to a production scale. In doing so, we decided to have some fun with the name, calling it “Buenaveza,” which – sort of – translates to “Good Beer,” and that’s exactly what it is!
BC: Is this your “desert island beer?”
No, that beer for me will always be Witty Moron, our black witbier.
BC: Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less?
“Ready-to-rock Mexican surf trip” – Ben Sheehan
BC: Do you know a story – or have a personal story – that revolves around this beer?
Ben Sheehan spent lots of time in the Baja region over the years. The majority of the mass-produced Mexican Style Lagers are not as easy to drink without adding sea salt or lime to the beer. Ben decided that he wanted to brew his own beer inspired by Mexican Style Lager, but save everyone the trouble of needing to add anything to the beer. However, this beer was perfectly crafted and tasted absolutely amazing even before the sea salt and lime.
BC: What's a good food pairing for this beer?
Fish tacos all day long.
