pFriem Oude Kriek
96 Rating - World Class
Fruit Lambic, Limited Release

JUDGE'S REVIEW
"This beer is intriguing without overwhelming the palate with oddities or resulting in a puckered-up face. When you find a good Kriek that combines the fresh tart cherries with elegant funky tartness that keeps revealing little secrets as you imbibe, that is a beer to behold and savor. That is beer history in a glass. pFriem Oude Kriek is one of those beers. Seek it out and savor it. This is what world class tastes like." - Rick Franckhauser, BJCP National Judge

BREWER'S DESCRIPTION
pFriem’s Oude Kriek is made by adding lush, juicy cherries grown right up the road, to our year-old lambic ale and letting them get to know each other for another ten months. Judging from the aromas of fruity, nuttiness and bright flavors of cherry pie and berries with a dry, tangy finish, they’re a perfect match.

ABV: 5.6%
IBUs: 6
Served at:  45º - 50º F
Hops: Aged Czech Saaz
Malts: Gambrinus Canadian Pilsner, Rahr Unmalted Wheat, Mecca Grade Wikiup Red Wheat

pFriem Oud Bruin
96 Rating - World Class
Oud Bruin, Limited Release

JUDGE'S REVIEW
"This brew poured a lovely dark brown color with striking red highlights, a clear body with a huge, light tan head leaving behind pretty white lacing around the glass. This was a gorgeous beer that had me more than ready to dive in. The upfront aroma was lactic and sour yet plenty of rich, aromatic malt elements tied it all together. The sour cherry flavors and sherry-like notes were heavenly, finishing very smooth with a sweet and tart impression." - Susan Ruud, BJCP Grand Master IV Judge

BREWER'S DESCRIPTION
pFriem’s Foudre barrel-aged Oud Bruin is a deep crimson beer featuring aromas of marionberry, apple butter and Cabernet, big notes of raspberry, fig, sherry and leather with a tart, jammy finish that will make any beer lover tip their hat.

ABV: 8.7%
IBUs: 10
Served at: 45 - 50°
Hops: Tettnang
Malts: Gambrinus Canadian Pilsner, Cara Munich, Cara Aroma, Carafa III, Cara Foam, Acidulated

Nectarine Golden Ale
95 Rating - Exceptional

Wild Specialty Beer, Limited Release

JUDGE'S REVIEW
"All told, this is a wonderful beer that expresses nectarine in subtle, but enjoyable ways, on top of a mildly sour and tart, slightly wild fermentation. For me, this beer provides enough variation – without being overly dominant in any way – to keep me interested in the next quaff, and that is a wonderful quality to find in a beer." John C. Tull, BJCP Master Judge

BREWER'S DESCRIPTION
pFriem Nectarine Golden Ale is aged in Sauvignon Blanc barrels before we add local Flavortop Nectarines. Six months later, the resulting aromas of marmalade and citrus zest, and notes of peach nectar and cantaloupe practically leap from the glass.

ABV: 6.9%
IBUs: 9
Served at: 45 - 50º
Hops: Tettnanger, Hallertau Blanc
Malts: Gambrinus Pilsner, Rahr Unmalted Wheat, Weyermann Carafoam, Weyermann Acidulated

pFriem Flanders-Style Red Ale
94 Rating - Exceptional

Flanders Red Ale, Limited Release

JUDGE'S REVIEW
"I can envision drinking this beer somewhere in the Flemish countryside while dining on mussels or duck The acidity of this beer would pair well with almost any fatty meat or if you don't care for meat then any dish that had a heavy cream sauce would be wonderful.  Only thing better would be sharing the entire experience with great friends."  - Susan Ruud, BJCP Grand Master IV Judge

BREWER'S DESCRIPTION
pFriem Flanders Red is a tribute to the Burgundies of Belgium, the red ales that once captivated the country. Each glass is rich with notes of cherry, hints of passionfruit and a Pinot-like flavor that comes from the eighteen months it spent in an oak barrel. Take one sip, savor the tart finish and you’ll understand how one beer could charm a country.

IBUs: 10
Served at: 40 - 45º
Hops: Hallertau Tradition
Malts: Gambrinus Canadian Pilsner, Cara Munich, Cara Aroma, Carafa III

About pFriem Family Brewers

pFriem Family Brewers is 2019's Brewery of the Year for the third time in four years, an absolutely stunning accomplishment that’s perfectly representative of the brewery’s devotion to producing incredible liquid achievements on a regular basis.

Just as they did in 2018, pFriem submitted two beers that earned a score of at least 96, giving the brewery a whopping six beers in its history that have been named world-class in the pages of The Beer Connoisseur.

Beyond the two world-class brews, pFriem submitted eight other beers that scored 91 or above, good for yet another incredible year of beer as the best brewery of 2019.

pFriem is making this accolade something of a habit for them, which merits the question: Is pFriem Family Brewers the best brewery in the world? The beers they create are not particularly flashy, nor does the brewery itself chase trends when they are planning their next brew. Instead, they simply focus on classic German- and Belgian-inspired styles delivered with high-quality local ingredients.

Though elegant in their minimalism, pFriem’s bottle and label designs feature few bells and whistles, and the brewery’s beer names simply describe the beer’s style – nothing more.

While that low-key style might go against the brash and bold nature of craft beer itself, in the end, quality of product is always going to win out when it comes to beer, and, as has been the case for three of the past four years, pFriem produced the best beers our judges reviewed in 2019.

Josh Pfriem, Brewmaster and Co-Founder, was inspired by a bike trip through Belgium, in which he met some of Europe’s greatest brewers, to open pFriem Family Brewers in the summer of 2012. His “ambition to meld European and Pacific Northwestern brewing traditions to create his own signature brand” shines through in each and every one of his brewery’s fantastic beers.

With incredible consistency and a sparkling stable of terrific beers brewed with minute attention to detail, pFriem Family Brewers once again earns the right to be called BC’s Brewery of the Year. Just as we wrote last year, pFriem is truly a beer connoisseur’s paradise and we encourage you, the reader, to visit the brewery and experience world-class for yourself.
