East Brother Beer Co. Releases Seasonal Maibock

East Brother Beer Co. in Richmond, California has announced the seasonal return of its Maibock just in time for spring. Full details are below.

It has been a long, cold lonely winter and we couldn’t be happier to see the light at the end of the tunnel. As we slowly and safely reopen in the Bay Area, we’re welcoming visitors back to the taproom with one of our limited-edition lagers brewed in the classic style, East Brother Beer Co.’s Maibock - “here comes the sun”!

The Legendary Goat

Traditionally, a Maibock, also known as a Helles Bock, was brewed over the long winter and released just in time to celebrate the beginning of spring. Maibock is a pale, more hopped-up version of its sibling, the Bock, a dark German lager first brewed in Einbeck, Germany. Bavarians took a liking to the Bock style, but with their charming accents, kept pronouncing the town of Einbeck as “ein Bock” or “billy goat” which is why to this day, goats are associated with Maibocks. Bavarians couldn’t get enough of the Bock, so much so that in the 16th century Maximillion I “The Great” Duke of Bavaria, commissioned Elias Pilcher to brew a similar beer using Bavaria’s new lagering method, creating the modern-day Maibock. 

East Brother Beer’s Maibock

Some lagers are brewed for greatness, and we think our Maibock deserves its places among the Greatest Of All Time. Last year’s Maibock was pretty darn-near perfect, but if you know us at all, you know that we’re always looking for ways to make perfect even better. Employing classic German techniques for our 2021 Maibock, we turned to our friends at Admiral Maltings for their coveted Admiral Midway, a Munich malt that gives the lager a biscuity malt flavor. This new malt, paired with the Admiral Pils malt we added last year, truly makes the 2021 Maibock live up to the GOAT title.

Tasting Notes

This year’s Maibock has a golden, light pale hue and a deliciously creamy white head; its aroma is slightly floral with just a hint of noble hop spiciness. This smooth, clean German-style lager has a rich malty backbone balanced with spicy and floral noble hops. At 7.0% ABV, the Maibock is an easy-drinking lager with delicate hop flavors and just enough bitterness on the finish to make you want another sip.
