We spoke with Green’s Gluten Free Beers Brewmaster Dirk Naudts and Professor of Brewing Saskia Waerniers about Green’s Gluten Free Dry-Hopped Lager.
Who was responsible for this beer’s recipe?
We worked together with Derek Green (a celiac and the founder of Green’s Gluten-Free) to develop this recipe and others for Green’s. It was a difficult but interesting challenge to brew great-tasting beers without the use of wheat or barley. We decided to use the naturally gluten-free ancient grains millet, sorghum, buckwheat and rice to make our ales and this lager.
What sets this beer apart from other examples within the style?
There just aren’t that many gluten-free lagers out there to categorize the style. When comparing it to lagers containing gluten we often hear, “I can’t believe this is gluten-free!”, making it a real showstopper. It’s this beer’s bitterness and spicy hop aroma that really complement the refreshing, crisp finish of this wonderful beer.
What makes this beer truly World Class?
We believe every adult should be able to enjoy a good beer. If you’re a celiac, choosing to maintain a gluten-free lifestyle or just looking for a great lager, this naturally gluten-free beer provides a wonderful balance of crisp, light malt taste combined with a floral aroma and notes of ginger and lemongrass. The ancient grains used are unusual by today’s brewing standards and give our beers unique and appealing flavor profiles.
What is your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, mouthfeel, etc.)?
All flavor and aroma components meld together so perfectly that it’s difficult to choose just one aspect. We dry hop with West Coast hops, giving the beer its bold bouquet with a high level of carbonation for a crisp, refreshing taste and dry finish.
How popular is this beer among your faithful fans?
Dry-Hopped Lager is our best-selling style from Green’s, closely followed by our naturally gluten-free IPA.
