Steamworks Brewery Head Brewer Julia Hanlon Talks Steamworks Pilsner

We spoke with Steamworks Brewery Head Brewer Julia Hanlon about Steamworks Pilsner.

BC: Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
This recipe is probably one of the oldest in the Steamworks book of recipes. It originated in our brewpub and was one of the first recipes we started making at our production brewery. It has certainly evolved over the years, but the goal has always been to make a crisp, dry Pilsner with a punch of German hop aroma and a clean bitterness.

BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
My favourite aspect of this beer is the herbal noble hop aroma that hits you right away, followed by the balanced hop bitterness and dry finish that makes you want to take another sip!

BC: Is this your “desert island beer?”
I have been asked about my “desert island beer” a number of times and I have gone on record to say that our Pilsner would be just that beer! I expect the desert island would be hot and I would be thirsty, so this is the beer I would want to be stranded with in plentiful supply!

BC: What's a good food pairing for this beer?
I personally enjoy this beer with spicier foods and “pub” food like wings or nachos. The dry finish and the slight bite from a higher carbonation really cleanse the pallet.
