Stone Brewing Senior Manager of Brewing and Innovation (Small Batch) Steve Gonzalez Talks Stone 21st Anniversary: Hail to the Hop Thief

Steve Gonzalez, Senior Manager of Brewing and Innovation – Small Batch at Stone Brewing Co.

BC: Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
I brainstormed this recipe with some of the crew from our new brewing facility in Richmond, Virginia. They suggested a wheat beer with Mosaic hops. I thought it was a great idea, and I added some new hops to the mix that I'm a big fan of  – the experimental hop 06300, and Pekko hops.

BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
The orange and stone fruit notes, with the hint of cherry candy you get in the flavor. It's pretty complex!

BC: Is this your “desert island beer?”
We experimented with making a lower ABV version of this beer at 6.5% ABV on our pilot system. Same hop bill, but lower gravity and lower ABV. I would prefer that on my private island!

BC: Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less?
Orangey, grainy, malty, peachy, tropical, fruity, and dank.

BC: Do you know a story – or have a personal story – that revolves around this beer?
My work Anniversary with Stone usually falls on or around the same weekend as Stone's Anniversary party. This year it was the day after the Anniversary party. What better way to celebrate than tasting this beer with fans?

BC: What's a good food pairing for this beer?
Mango with sticky rice.
