Upland Brewing Co. Head of Brewing Operations and COO Pete Batule Talks Bockness Monster

We spoke with Upland Brewing Co. Head of Brewing Operations and COO Pete Batule about Bockness Monster.

BC: Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
This recipe was developed by our clean barrel program lead, Zech Algood.

BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
I love the rich, malty, bread crusty flavors of the base beer combined with the oak, bourbon and fruity oxidized flavors from the barrel-aging.

BC: Where does this beer’s name come from?
When we were naming this beer, one of our packaging members, Josh Linton, came in with a scroll of Bock puns. This is the one we liked best and at just shy of 10%, it's a bit of a monster Doppelbock.

BC: Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less?
Dark fruit with rich malt flavor and balanced oak character.

BC: Do you know a story – or have a personal story – that revolves around this beer?
This beer was the start of a new line of beers, “Brewer’s Reserve Series” that Zech had a heavy hand in developing. From recipe development to brewing to barrel-aging, hand-bottling and wax-dipping, Zech was the lead on the entire process, and we think the beer came out beautifully.

BC: What's a good food pairing for this beer?
We suggest German-style foods. Pretzels and mustard, or maybe a wurst plate with sauerkraut.
