Starr Hill's flagship Northern Lights IPA has gotten a makeover. On top of Columbus and Cascade, the brewery's hop doctors have incorporated Falconer's Flight, Simcoe and Centennial and simplified the malt bill for added aroma and flavor, and an overall smoother body.
We cracked open both, and as advertised, the revamped Northern Lights is more hop-centric, with a lot of grassy aroma and almost a touch of barnyard flavor, compared to the older, more malt focused version.
Other changes include a slight dip in ABV, from 6.5% to 6.2%, and while it's what's inside that counts, the label artwork has also been redone.
