OUR STORY

One might say the spark for the idea behind the brewery happened in 1992 with a visit to Cortina, Italy. Founders, Steve and Heidi Crandall were on a ski trip and were introduced to a German beer called Weihenstephan. This first real “craft” beer experience started a trend in the Crandall household, planting the seed that slowly grew into an idea, and then bloomed to become Devils Backbone Brewing Company.

On a quest for a simpler life, our founder only made it as far as Utah, and then he had a beer. He found less a state than a state of mind and a perfect place to brew beer.

Shmaltz Brewing started in northern California in 1996, our first He’brew creation, Genesis Ale, came in 22s, hand bottled, hand labeled and delivered out of my grandmothers’ Volvo. Founded as “a Jewish celebration craft beer” by proprietor Jeremy Cowan, HE'BREW Beer has incorporated quality, community, and shtick since their conception. Our beers are distributed in over thirty-seven U.S. states, by 40 distributors and in 5,000 retailers across the U.S. and Canada.
