We spoke with Mutation Brewing Head Brewer Dan Caudle about 99Xperiment.
Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
I did. I had heard about this emerging style and wanted to try my hand at creating one.
What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
I think the aspects it pulls from (both the traditional Pilsner and IPA styles) are what I really like. It’s highly drinkable with a noble hop character and taste, while having hints of West Coast IPA aroma that pair well for a nice, balanced drinking experience.
Where does this beer’s name come from?
We partnered with 99X radio (FM 100.5) for this brew and they wanted something edgy and experimental to fit in with the music they like to play.
Is this your “desert island beer?”
I’d say it’s pretty damn close! It’s definitely a beer that encourages more than one in a sitting.
Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less?
Best of both Pilsner and West Coast IPA.
Do you know a story – or have a personal story – that revolves around this beer?
I was already wanting to brew this style when we began talking with 99X about a collaboration. When they mentioned they wanted something experimental, I knew this was the right fit. It’s also our first canned beer at Mutation Brewing so a big milestone for us!
What's a good food pairing for this beer?
Lemon Pepper Wet wings! The slight hop bitterness and malt sweetness contrasts well with the mild spiciness of the sauce, while the lemon complements the citrusy aromas from the hops.
