Ultra marathon runner Karl Meltzer has set a new world record for the 2,190 mile Appalachian Trail, completing the journey in just 45 days 22 hours 38 minutes. His secret to success? Nightly beers, along with steady supplies of candy, bacon and energy drinks.
At 48, Meltzer is six years older than former record holder Scott Jurek, whose 2015 record of 46 days 8 hours 7 minutes was fueled by an all-vegan diet. Not so for Meltzer, who would cap off each night with one to two beers, and had no problem incorporating sweets, ice cream, and all manner of seemingly less-than ideal treats into his regimen. Then again, when you're averaging 50+ miles a day in 15 hours, you can probably eat whatever you like.
Most importantly, it seems Meltzer has a taste for craft. While he couldn't be reached for comment, reports of Meltzer drinking Dale's Pale Ale were located, which would strike a balance between flavor and post-run suitability.
