Circa 1926 by Darwin Brewing Co. is being evaluated as a Fruit and Spice Beer (Category 29B) from the 2015 BJCP Style guidelines.
Upon pouring this beer, there are aroma notes of citrus fruit peel and light brown cane sugar. Very low esters give way to a moderate amount of grainy malt with very low floral hops.
This beer poured hazy and straw-colored with a considerable amount of visible carbonation. It was crowned by a soft white head.
The flavors are herbal, without much coriander or tangerine as the label characteristics suggest. Grainy, two-row type malt flavors, and a very low floral hop flavor came next. The bitterness is moderate, while the finish lightly resembles soda pop. The aftertaste is long and very drying, with not much else to cling to in the flavor department.
Moderately light body, moderately high carbonation with a moderate amount of astringency.
This beer could use a slightly different yeast strain to bring out more esters. It could also use more drinkability and balance. It has a certain resemblance to an American wheat beer, but the added fruit and spices do not make a positive contribution to the overall experience.
