Alpha Abstraction, Vol. 17 by Wild Leap Brew Co. is a Double IPA and was judged as such via BJCP Category 22A.

Alpha Abstraction has an intensely juicy aroma, mimicking a pulpy orange-grapefruit juice mixture. It would be very easy to forget that the aroma is hop-derived. Its appearance is similarly juicy with its milky orange, textured color. It's topped with a tall white head.

Surprisingly, the flavor is totally divergent. It is fiercely bitter from the first sensation to the last, with only minimal accompanying sweetness or juicy flavors. This beer is dominated by an herbal, bitter hop flavor that overtakes the rest. The mouthfeel is warm and cotton ball-dry, and finishes with harsh astringency.

Alpha Abstraction's aroma and appearance are enjoyable and unique. Unfortunately, the flavor is far too bitter and one-dimensional for those seeking a true-to-style DIPA. Daredevils may enjoy a go at this one.
