Animal Hazy IPA by Denizens Brewing Co. was reviewed under the style guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program in the provisional category as a New England IPA 21B.
A turbid Pale yellow ale with a three finger ivory head that didn’t persist. The bouquet was characterized by a tropical fruit aroma along with mixed citrus notes while only a light hop complement was perceptible.
Zesty fruit flavors dominate the taste profile and were reminiscent of citrus (tangerines and grapefruit) and other tropical fruits. Malt was barely detectable as was hop bitterness as it appeared that the majority of hops utilized here were in the form of dry-hopping, which enhanced the complexity. Alcohol came into play and lent its warming character without overwhelming. The body was thin with medium carbonation and no astringency.
Quite typical of the New England IPA style with its fruit-dominated flavors and aromas yet not overly juicy as other renditions of the style frequently are.
