When the Sun Gose Down by Arches Brewing is a refreshing and rather tart offering that tends to hit the mark overall for the style with a complementary fruity character that adds a touch of complexity. This beer is being evaluated as a Category 23G Gose as per the 2021 BJCP Style Guidelines.
A tart citrus/coriander character along with a light wheaty cereal note in the background is evident upon the pour. Very little other malt character is evident, as expected. The beer is a very hazy straw color with a moderately sized white, small-bubble head that dissipates almost immediately, which is atypical for the style. Normally a gose has a solid, well-retained head.
The moderate lactic/citric sour character in the flavor hits you up front. Coriander and salt notes come up right behind this, but are somewhat overwhelmed by the sourness. There is very little cereal/wheat character noted in the flavor. The body is quite light and the finish is tart and dry, delivering a lingering sourness through the finish, which allows the palate to stay clean in preparation for the next sip. The carbonation is somewhat low for the style, but due to the tartness, the palate stays clean.
Overall, this is a refreshing and thirst-quenching offering. If you like true sours, this would be a great gose option for you!
