Gnarly Barley India Pale Lager by Gnarly Barley Brewing Co. is an India Pale Lager and is being evaluated as an Experimental Beer (category 34C in the 2015 BJCP Beer Style Guidelines). The Experimental Beer category is a catch-all category for beers that do not fit the other styles in the BJCP Guidelines.  India Pale Lagers are typically stronger (in malt level and alcohol) lagers than the typical lower-gravity lagers. Additionally, India Pale Lagers have a hop intensity more similar to an American IPA. IPL is brewed with Wakatu and Motueka hops.

IPL pours light golden in color with very good clarity and a big, mousse-like white head. The aroma is moderate floral and honeydew melon-like hops with a lighter citrusy note; the aroma also has a hint of malt and no esters. The flavor has a light pils malt character underneath a moderate lime and floral hoppiness with a hint of grapefruit. The beer finishes moderately bitter with light lime and floral hop flavors.

IPL is a refreshing lager with a more intense new world style hop character than typical low-to-middle gravity European or International lagers. The new word hop character brings a lot of different hop flavors without being overly aggressive. Pilsner lovers and hop heads will equally enjoy this beer.
