For the Love of Lager: German Style Dark Lager by Wallenpaupack Brewing Co. is being judged as a Schwarzbier, BJCP Category 8B.
Schwarzbier, or Black Lager, is an often overlooked German style. Helles and Pils have cornered the pale lager market, while its amber-hued cousins, Marzen and Festbier, dominate the autumn beer season given their close association with Oktoberfest celebrations. Schwarzbier is far darker and roastier style, but it's just as malty, clean and drinkable as the rest of the German lager slate. Proving that appearances can be deceiving, it is nowhere near as rich or filling as any of the Bock substyles.
For the Love of Lager has a moderately roasted aroma with light chocolate and mild richness. There is a hint of caramel and no burnt character. It pours clear with a tall off-white head. Its flavor is bready, which is characteristic of the Munich malt that probably makes up a large portion of the malt bill, as well as moderately acidic from its roasted character. The acidity sometimes creates a twinge in the finish. Hop flavors and bitterness are either absent or well hidden, but that's just fine because the roasted edge creates sufficient bitterness. This beer is dry in the finish and very clean throughout. It has a medium-light body and moderately high carbonation, which creates a crisp sensation. Overall, this is a delicious beer and a genuine representation of the style.
