Boat Ramp Champ by Cape May Brewing Co. was reviewed using guidelines provided by the Beer Judge Certification Program under sub-heading 4A, Munich Helles, after being dispensed from a 16-ounce can into a pilsner glass.
A fresh biscuit-like malt aroma is immediately perceived upon initial pour. Hops add a delicate touch to the balance, though they assume a junior position. No off aromas.
Pale yellow and brilliantly clear with a finely beaded and full white head.
The malt is accented in a light and grainy fashion with an exceptionally clean fermentation that allows the base ingredients to manifest themselves and represent the style. Hops of a noble variety influence the flavor in a gentle way avoiding a cloying sweet perception.
The mouthfeel is medium to light and smooth over the tongue and leads to a soft and lightly dry finish.
A very easy-drinking example of the style and a nice break from over-hopped IPAs that flood the market.
