Alpha Abstraction, Vol. 16 by Wild Leap Brew Co. was judged as a Double IPA (BJCP Category 22A).

The beer has a well-balanced hop and malt aroma. The malt adds a dimension of sweetness to the aroma, whereas the hops are tropical fruity (mostly mango and passion fruit) and somewhat floral. The color is straw with some light copper highlights. Some haze is present, which is fine in a Double IPA. The head is white, thin, and persistent on the edge of the glass, but never more than a wispy presence. The flavor is dominated by bold and complex hoppiness. The hops are the same fruity character as noted in the aroma, dominated by tropical flavors, but also somewhat resinous, particularly in the finish with a touch of pithiness. The bitterness is very strong, but is nicely offset with sweet malt that carries from start to finish with the hop flavors and bitterness. Alcohol presence produces a slight nutty quality that comes out more as the beer warms. The mouthfeel is medium and smooth, almost creamy. There is a bit of hop astringency, but it is not what I would call harsh. There is a touch of alcohol warmth on the palate as well.

Overall, this is an incredibly enjoyable Double IPA that is very well made, balanced as you would like the style to be, and nearly flawless. The hop complexity in both the aroma and flavor, along with the additional palate sensations, produces a bold, but not overwhelming Double IPA. You know you are drinking a big beer with a lot of character, but you are not having your taste buds blown out in the process. If you like hops, particularly those with tropical fruit aromas and flavors, you will probably enjoy this beer very much.
