Rougarou’s Curse by Low Road Brewing is an English Barleywine (BJCP sub-style 17D). It poured a clear, deep amber color into the glass, forming a dense white head with moderate retention. The aroma was dominated by rich, layered malt notes including strong hints of caramel, raisins and dates. Absent was any noticeable hop aroma, consistent with most interpretations of the style. Alcohol warmth was evident throughout, but in a subtle way and not overpowering as with some barleywines.
The flavor profile resembled that of the aroma, featuring rich complex maltiness, warmth and some sherry-like oxidation that may well increase with age. The mouthfeel included the same rich, caramel and pleasantly viscous notes that dominated the flavor profile along with low carbonation, moderate warmth, no astringency and slight creaminess. Overall, this English barleywine is extremely flavorful and well made, inviting appreciative sipping from fans of this robust albeit strong style. While not normally sessionable, this beer will make an excellent nightcap among the many strong ale lovers drawn to rich, complex, rewarding brews.
