Beer Judge

John Tull began making beer for himself and his friends in 1994 just prior to moving to Utah to begin graduate school. While working on his Ph.D. in Reno, Nevada, John became interested in judging beer, mead and cider through his friends and colleagues in the Washoe Zephyr Zymurgists, a homebrew club with strong and early representation in the Beer Judge Certification Program. He took the BJCP exam in 2001 and gradually has risen to the rank of Grand Master I. John has judged in more than 50 beer competitions and organized eight, including the AHA National Homebrew Competition final round in 2009. Outside of his life as a beer judge, John is a wildlife ecologist focused on conservation of fragile desert landscapes and the wildlife that live there. He and his wife Marlene have two wonderful daughters and a French Brittany named Jaca.

The aroma in this beer is an almost equal blend of caramel malts and grassy and floral hops. Some mild fruit esters are detectable as well. The color is a pale copper with slight haze and a light, white head primarily on the edges of the glass. There are grassy, herbal and floral hop favors that... Read More

The aroma of this pale Kellerbier is a great blend of noble hops (earthy, herbal and a touch of spice), pale malts and yeast. The yeast and malt provide a slight bread-like quality that rounds out the hop aromas nicely. It appears as a slightly hazy pale straw color with a very slight head of... Read More

Toasty malts, just a hint of caramel, and a little bit of background sulfur are in the aroma of this beer. There are no fruit or ale-like aromas; instead it is clean and lager-like in its yeast expression, as desired for this style. The color is reddish-copper, very clear, with the faintest of... PreFunk Pale Ale by Worthy Brewing Co. was judged as an American Pale Ale (18B). Aggressive hop aroma that is floral and earthy is backed by a bready, slightly sweet malt aroma. The malt sweetness has a slight caramel aroma. The beer is a pale copper with a fine, off-white head that lingers.... Read More

Tanker Truck Sour Series-Passion Fruit by Two Roads Brewing Co. was judged as a Wild Specialty Beer (28C) with passion fruit (base style: Gose). Passion fruit and lemon zest aromas are subtle, struggling to break through the wild yeast earthy character. As the beer opens up, the fruit becomes... Read More
