We spoke with New Realm Brewing Brewmaster and Co-Founder Mitch Steele about Haze Dipper.
BC: Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
All of our beers are a team effort. In this case our sales team asked for us to try brewing a hazy pale ale, so the brewing team and I tried some ideas and things that we had learned brewing hazy/juicy IPAs over the last several years and made some modifications for the lower alcohol content. The hop combination is unique and a fun part of the recipe.
BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
I love the combination of American Citra and Comet hops with the Australian Vic Secret hops.
BC: Where does this beer’s name come from?
Our marketing team came up with the Haze Dipper name and the astronaut-themed label after our first test batch was brewed with Comet hops.
BC: Is this your “desert island beer?”
I really don’t have a desert island beer. I like too many different beers and styles. But I do enjoy drinking this one. I appreciate the lower alcohol content and the hop flavor.
BC: Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less?
Citra, Comet hops, Vic Secret hops: Hazy, nice balance.
BC: Do you know a story – or have a personal story – that revolves around this beer?
We first brewed this beer as a Beer of the Month for Taco Mac, an Atlanta-based sports bar and craft beer bar chain. Its popularity in Taco Mac inspired us to release it full-time.
BC: What's a good food pairing for this beer?
It is a little lighter than an IPA, and not as bitter, so lean to the lighter sides of food pairings. The hops help cut spice and heat, and also help with cleansing the palate when eating fatty foods. Look at Haze Dipper as a great pairing for salmon and other seafood as well as salads, burgers and sandwiches.
