ALT 51 by Low Road Brewing is being evaluated as a Altbier (2021 BJCP Guidelines Category 7B). It poured a deep amber color with garnet highlights that shone brightly due to the brilliant clarity.
The nose displays a malty richness that stops short of doppelbock: moderate toast, breadcrusts, heavy Maillard products with just a touch of caramel. The restrained black pepper hops with a touch of general floral attributes provide intrigue since the fermentation is quite clean. The flavor follows that of the aroma with a similar, malt-forward profile. Solid attenuation results in a semi-dry finish enhancing the brew’s drinkability.
Overall, Alt 51 is a solid offering with an enhanced malt presence relative to many examples. However, the hop bitterness aids in bringing the beer firmly into the altbier style.
