Bat Wit Crazy

Bat Wit Crazy by New Realm Brewing is a somewhat mild and tarted interpretation of the BJCP Category 24A Witbier style, per the 2021 BJCP guidelines. While this offering comes off more as a slightly spiced and soured American wheat, it would still be an enjoyable offering for warm weather refreshment.

The aroma delivers tart lemon-like notes with a touch of coriander in the back. There is also evident wheat/cereal sharpness along with a touch of soapiness, which might have arisen due to the spicing. The brew has a hazy very light golden color and a solid white, small-bubbled lacy head with nice retention. The appearance is definitely what you would be looking for in the style.

The flavor is rather tart with an evident wheat bite. The fermentation character is rather subtle, quite similar to that of an American Wheat (BJCP Category 1D). Subtle coriander notes come through and linger from start to finish. The body is light-medium and the carbonation is moderate, and it has a quite dry finish.

Bat Wit Crazy is an rather subtle interpretation of a traditional witbier. The sourness is the one area that stands out, but that might be a bit strong considering the overall flavor profile. I could see this brew as being a very good summer quaffer or in a food pairing with an oilier fish like salmon.
