Blind Squirrel Brewery features beer and cider crafted on site, as well as pub menu favorites and seasonal Farm to Table creations from chef Flanders' open kitchen. Take advantage of dining on our decks situated directly along the North Toe River or take a relaxing float from upstream on a tubing excursion. Tubing is $15-$20 and includes shuttle upstream and last approximately 1.25 hours. We also offer a 9 hole putt-putt disc golf experience in addition to 9 full holes. Free Brewery Tours by reserving online. Limited lodging is available on-site at the brewery location while the majority of available lodging is at the Farm Retreat property. Whenever possible, meals are prepared with fresh seasonal vegetables, fruits, and herbs from the brewery's own farm located just one mile away.
Blind Squirrel Ziplines & Farm Retreat offers guided canopy zipline tours, our mountain disc golf course, and a wide variety of lodging from camping to cabins. The experience is centered on being outside and connecting with the property. Our farm operations consist of vegetable gardens, mini-orchard, berry bushes, pumpkin patch, greenhouses, chickens for eggs, and trout from our own pond. A shuttle is offered to Farm Retreat guests to and from the brewery location on Friday-Sunday for a safe and worry free experience!
Lodging is available any day of the week, but our retail operations at the brewery are only available on Friday-Sunday. Hearty breakfasts are available everyday for those staying on site in one of our various lodging spaces from B&B, cabins, camping, and more. Lodging guests also have the option of adding dinner meals during weeknight stays. The Blind Squirrel Brewery can accommodate groups up to 100 for special occasions.
The Blind Squirrel’s Story...
The Blind Squirrel was born and raised in Avery County in the small township of Plumtree, NC. After years of making and consuming wood alcohol he began to go blind. After a visit to the doctor he quickly determined that he must improve the quality of his beverages or his sight would be completely lost forever. The Blind Squirrel is now considered to be legally blind, but he still manages to brew up some of the tastiest beer in the high country. Don’t let the condition of his sight fool you as he plays a mean round of disc golf! We are home to a great disc golf experience with nine full holes on our beautiful riverfront property complimented by an additional nine hole tiki disc golf putting course. Whether you are a seasoned thrower or tossing your first disc, we have the perfect place for you to spend the afternoon with your friends and some great beers!
History of the brewery
The Vance Toe River Lodge was originally built in 1919 as the T. B. Vance General Store. After trading hands through the years and seeing its fair share of abuse it was renovated by the Young family and continues to evolve. What started as a B&B eventually moved to become a small family owned resort now offering an array of activities making Plumtree, NC a true destination. After a few years of avid homebrewing, the dream to add a brewery to the line-up slowly moved towards reality. After a few more years of recipe formulation and piles of paperwork later, the brewery finally opened in August of 2012. We are excited to be able to live in such a wonderful place and still have the ability to follow our passions. Come out to Plumtree so we can prove to you that we’re nuts about beer!!
