Drip au Lait Orange Almond, Urban South Brewery
Description

We took this Drip Au Lait to another level. We started with a toasted almond cream base, added sweet valencia orange juice to give it a creamsicle like twist. We chose Hipp Family Honduran Monte Verde Natural for its sweet flavor profile and pineapple quality. Some of the coffee was dosed via cold brew and then we cold steeped a pound per barrel of Whole Bean for 24 hours for that added, fresh roasted coffee aroma!

Drip au Lait Orange Almond by Urban South Brewery is a sour beer with the addition of coffee, orange and almond flavorings. These additions cause the beer to fall under BJCP category 28C Wild Specialty Beer, which is home to sour versions of fruit/herb/spice or wood beers. This beer pours a deep yellow color that is nearly a solid orange with how hazy it is. There is also a fast fading white head, which is a common trait in sour beers due to the bacteria (lacto is believed to break down proteins that aid in foam) and low volume of hops (the polyphenols aid in retention). The aroma throws you for a loop with strong notes of coffee and orange, which are not typically found in sours. These notes did not complement each other and clashed in my opinion, with the coffee seeming really out of place. Far beneath these notes was a very light doughy malt, but it was hard to pick up much sour, yeast or hop notes otherwise as the strong coffee grounds-like aroma drowned out the beer. The flavor was much improved on the aroma. The mild coffee notes fell to the background and orange really stood out with a light citrusy sour that was like a creamsicle mixed with lemonade but better. There was also more malt character, but similarly doughy wheat and grain-like fresh pizza dough. The body was rather full for a sour and even kind of creamy -- possibly from an addition of lactose? This was a really interesting combination that I had never seen before. Ultimately it didn’t really work for me, but where it shined was in the flavor where the coffee was mostly absent.
