Florida Cracker

Today, I want to talk about crackers: Not the mildly explosive Christmas novelties that provide my family and me with stylish paper headwear during the holidays, nor those crunchy and savory standard-bearers for sustaining a soup’s lifespan, Saltines.

No, today’s crackers are Cigar City Brewing’s Florida Cracker witbier and Atlanta’s sole baseball team until the Braves moved here in 1966 – The Atlanta Crackers.

Macro Strategy -- It's In The Numbers

The first quarter results from the two largest brewers in the U.S. confirm the ongoing strategy for how the bigger brewers continue to respond to competition from the smaller, independent brewers in the craft segment.

Description

Hearty malts meld with a subtle balance of hops to create a dark and nurturing ale of comfort and complexity. Hints of bittersweet chocolate and espresso fill the tongue, finishing with just a touch of smoke. Not too sweet or filling, this versatile dark ale dissuades the notion that a darker beer is a stronger beer. Five varieties of roasted malts are the source of Porter's dark color and rich taste, while two varieties of hops bring a mellow bite to this deep toasty ale

FOOD PAIRINGS: Particularly tasty with slow-cooked meats, grilled cheese, smoked sausage. Pairs well with chocolate desserts, pumpkin pie, cheesecake.

Description

Milk stout, also called a cream or sweet stout, is a stout containing lactose, a sugar derived from milk. Because lactose is unfermentable by beer yeast, it adds sweetness and body to the finished beer. Milk stouts have been claimed to be nutritious, and were marketed as such in the early 1900s with claims that would make the FDA wince. One ad read, Ideal for nursing mothers, for the healthy, for the invalid, and for the worker. Surely! Of course, we couldn't stop at a traditional milk stout. Ours is a double, an addition to our 2X line, and at 7.5% abv is every bit as delicious as it sounds. To your health!

At Southern Tier Brewing Company, heavily hopped beers have been their calling card since Unearthly made its debut in 2006. Gemini is a super hopped ale with six varieties of hops blasting flavor and zapping bitterness in every direction.

Like a geminaut, this beer is two souls in one package; a bitter hop bomb on one side with sweet malts on the other. Travel high into the heavens!

ABOUT THE NAME: Southern Tier produced Gemini Blended Imperial Ale as a limited release for 4 years until it was discontinued in 2012. The name “Gemini” has deep meaning to us which is why we decided to let it fly one more time. The current version is a brand new creation based on the body, mind and spirit of the original. This is a wholly new beer, but does nod back in time. They know you’ll find the new Gemini Super Hopped Ale to meet your lofty expectations associated with the namesake.

FOOD PAIRINGS: Very high bitterness accentuates spicy foods like Szechuan and Thai dishes, chicken wings. Try with smoked brisket, sharp and blue cheeses and sweet desserts

Sweet Baby Jesus

PB&J, a team more fabled than Pippen and Jordan, has been mending broken hearts and soothing taste buds for generations. The same could be said for beer. So we made a beer sandwich with DuClaw Brewing's Sweet Baby Jesus chocolate peanut butter porter, and Funk, a blueberry citrus wheat beer.

Full disclosure, we only had Sweet Baby Jesus, but as a peanut butter lover of a magnitude approaching Booker T. Washington, the experience was divine.

Description

How, you may ask, would a brewery determine a likeness to hard-coated custard? Southern Tier's response is simple; its all in the power of history, and of course, the extra finesse needed to top off a contentious treat with definition.

By comprehending the labyrinthine movement of time, one would not think it strange to trace the errant path of an ordinary object such as a cream dessert only to discover that it has been the cause of cultural disputes since the middle ages. The British founders of burnt cream and from Spain, crema catalana, both stand by their creative originality and we respect that, but it was the French Crme Brle, amid the strife of contention, that survived to represent this deliciously creamy brew!

FOOD PAIRINGS: Particularly tasty as dessert, or try paired with vanilla custard, bananas foster, or over vanilla ice cream.

10 Barrel Announces Colorado Expansion

Oregon's 10 Barrel Brewing Company has announced that it will begin selling selected products in Boulder and Denver. Both on-premise and grocery store sales are in the works with further expansion throughout the state planned as well.

“The plan is that once we get a presence in the Denver market, to go through the whole state,” 10 Barrel brewery partner Garrett Wales said in an article on bendbulletin.com.

Colorado joins Oregon, Idaho and Washington as the fourth state in which 10 Barrel beers are sold.
