Breckenridge – 72 Imperial

As names and labels go, Breckenridge’s use of a 1972 Imperial lookalike for its 7.2 percent ABV Imperial Chocolate Cream Stout ranks highly on the cool scale.

The beer is driven by a long smooth taste of roasted dark malts and chocolate with a pleasant afterburner of alcohol. A dusting of the chocolate flavor at the finish is a reminder of what just cruised past.

Yep, alcohol in the flavor profile works (although it’s slightly below imperial scale). And the straightforward, long-hooded format works, too. This is not a complicated imperial, merely bold.

De Proef Saison Imperiale Beer
Judges Ratings
Description

Created in 2006. While the style is generally known for its light body and subtle spice, Saison Imperiale is a bolder, "mega" interpretation of the style. Light amber in color, funky wild yeast notes and spice to the nose, with a bit more malt character, body, and hop notes as appropriate to the "Imperiale" style.

From the Flemish translation for "sweet-sour." This is a unique amber colored ale of multi yeast strain fermentation, with a hint of Belgian Kriek (cherry) juice added. The brewer has combined these elements in a subtle and complex blend where sour notes are balanced by tart fruit, hints of wood, and a velvety finish.
