Maine Full Pint Bill Passes First Round

A Maine bill seeking to ensure beers advertised as pints are a full 16 ounces has passed its first round of votes in the Maine Legislature’s Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee.

The bill sponsored by Democratic Senator John Patrick, which passed 12-2, will crack down on bars and restaurants that advertise pints but serve them in 14 ounce glasses.

“It’s like truth in advertising,” Patrick told the Portland Press Herald. “As with any other standardized thing, if you buy something of a specific measure, you expect to get that much.”

"Oscar" Worthy Coffee

New Belgium is in Atlanta for Secret Stash and Argosy hosted a flight of sours. Was the word flight ever more appropriate? The single barrel “Oscar,” the sourcing for La Folie, the 2014 La Folie, a Leopold (Oscar aged in Blackberry Whiskey barrels from Leopold Bros), and "Oscar" Worthy Coffee sent taste buds and spirits soaring.

Hal Doss, a native of Rome, Georgia and a brewer who literally worked his way up from the New Belgium cellar, was on hand to talk about sours. He’ll be at the Square Pub in Decatur tonight with an apple Leopold and NB seasonals on tap.

Smitten

As we spring forward this weekend adjusting our sleep schedules and daily routines, our food and drink palates tend to change as well. It could be the birds chirping in the dawn or the premature pollen in the air, but I'm stoked when I smell fresh grass and morning dew. I then suddenly notice myself craving beers with resiny hops and earthy character so why shouldn't I give this Golden Rye Ale a try?

Unchained #18: Hop Silo

Today we’re flipping the ignition switch on a heretofore unseen consequence of science. Summit Brewing Company’s canned Hop Silo DIPA from their Unchained series is their first foray into the rapidly expanding world of explosively hopped beers. It is indeed a molecular powder keg of hop flavor (five kinds), but it’s justified by a trio of well-bonded malts.

Cans are on the up and up for flavorful beer, and flavors are on the rise within them. There will be casualties along the way, but it’s for the greater good of freedom-loving taste buds around the world.

Oklahoma Excise Tax Has Brewers Worried

As beer legislation continues to be a frequent topic in state capitols in support of smaller brewers, Oklahoma is looking at increasing taxes on breweries within its borders.

Legislators are pushing three bills that will reform how beer is taxed and regulated within Oklahoma. The most controversial is House Bill 1858, which proposes to eliminate any sales tax on beer 3.2 percent ABW (alcohol by weight) or lower, but increase the excise tax more than 300 percent, from 35 cents a gallon to $1.42 cents a gallon for beer brewed in-state.

Heady Topper

With the recent media fuss over "The Dress," now I question what color is this can? White and gold or blue and black? Who cares! This Heady Topper is a prime example of the statement "It's what's on the inside that counts!" Enough said.

Word to the wise, follow instructions. The Alchemist clearly recommends that you DRINK FROM THE CAN! I heeded their advice and enjoyed the delightful hop experience.

Bud Sales Down in U.S.

In full year results announced by Anheuser-Busch InBev, the sale of Budweiser in the U.S. continued to slip. But increases in Brazil and China more than offset the slide in terms of total sales in 2014.

The volume of the company’s designated Global Brands of Budweiser, Corona and Stella Artois grew by 5.4 percent, said CEO Carlos Alves Brito. “We believe we have the strongest portfolio of brands in the industry with 16 brands each generating over $1 billion in retail sales per year and more in the making through successful innovations, such as the Ritas.”
