Black Currant Sour by Low Road Brewing is being evaluated as a Wild Specialty Beer (BJCP 2015 Guidelines Category 28C) with black currant as the featured ingredient within a Berliner Weisse (Catgory 23A).

The beer has a low aroma profile overall, but what is present is akin to orange sweet tarts candy and raspberry lemonade. The beer is murky with the appearance of orange Gatorade. A tightly packed medium off-white head has above-average retention for the style. The beer itself has quite a bit of sweetness that detracts from the presence of acidity. Black currant is on the tart end of the spectrum for fruit – more of its presence would aid both the balance of acidity as well as help give this beer a more vibrant color. The beer is enjoyable to drink but lacks the proper balance due to high sweetness and low tartness. This offering drinks more like an American wheat ale with a small addition of black currant rather than a sour base beer with black currant added.
