Dark Allyance by Wild Leap Brew Co. was judged as a 2021 BJCP style 30A Spice, Herb or Vegetable Beer.

It poured quite dark with a generous viscosity. Although it was a bit of a challenge to coax a head out of the initial samples, the head was dark oatmeal color with big bubbles that fell fast, which is not uncommon for beers that contain nuts.

Aromas noted included coconut, sour taffy and cocoa. The fairly low level of carbonation allowed each sip to linger on your tongue, which revealed components of hazelnuts, bitter chocolate and a prominent saltiness. As the glass warmed, the salt flavor receded and the alcohol warmth in the finish came forward.

An interesting after-dinner sipper, but seems like a few parts don’t fit together to make it stellar.
