Description

A sour wheat ale, aged on loads of tangerine puree, reminiscent of a fresh mimosa. We wanted to bring you a refreshing sour ale, and this is it! Loads of sweet tangerine, soft acidity, with a pop of effervescence at the end. Grab a porch, grab a Pop!

Pop! by Urban South Brewery is a fruited sour that falls under BJCP category 28C Wild Specialty Beer with a base style that seems to be Berliner weisse, which is BJCP category 23A. This style is home to sour versions of fruit/herb/spice or wood beers. This beer pours a very pale straw with a bit more haze/orange from the addition of fruit. It is very fizzy and seltzer-like with a white head that collapses quickly and fades away. The aroma is light doughy wheat bread with a touch of grainy malt that turns into moderate tartness with a bit of citrus (lemon, orange, grapefruit) and a light kettle funk. No hops to speak of in either the aroma or the flavor beyond just a touch of bitterness. The flavor takes on more of the sour and citrus notes than the aroma and they build more as you drink it. Along with the slight puckering from the sour, there is also a crisp, tingling popping on the tongue/palate. This is a great classical Berliner enhanced with a juicy extra citrus twang that complements the style very well.
