Judge's Review: 86 Rating - Kryptonite Double IPA by Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant

Kryptonite Double IPA

Kryptonite Double IPA

Kryptonite Double IPA, Iron Hill Brewery
Description

Brewed with more than twice the usual hops, this Double IPA is a hop hero of sorts. First, you'll taste notes of citrus, tropical fruit, and pine. Then, that craveable bitterness swoops in. So strong, so powerful, this beer might just be your, well, let's just say weakness.

Kryptonite Double IPA by Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant is being evaluated as a Double IPA (Category 22A) from the 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines.

Kryptonite Double IPA starts off with a moderately high muddled hop aroma of dried grapefruit peel and very light resin behind the citrus. A light bready malt emerges behind the smooth, floral alcohol that develops as it warms. The overall hop character presents as muddled and aged. No fermentation esters were noted behind the hop aroma. The hop character in the flavor shifts to a prominent grassy and green hay aroma with a light bready malt following behind. The apparent dry hop character covers the citrus and resin that was noted in the aroma. High hop bitterness develops quickly and remains smooth without any harshness or astringency. The moderate floral alcohol creates a smooth warming on the palate as expected from a Double IPA. The inviting appearance consists of a deep amber color with slight haze, and a light beige head that lingers.

The dry hop character in the flavor is aggressive and hides the nuances of the hop varieties; this needs to be toned down considerably for the true essence of the hops to shine through.
