Redux on Vanilla Clouds Marshmallow Milk Stout by Garage Brewing Co. is being judged according to the 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines, Category 33B – Specialty Wood-Aged Beer.
Bourbon or beer, a blind sniff does not reveal the truth? The Buffalo Trace Bourbon nose greets me immediately, showcasing sweet vanilla and fresh oak character. The moderate roast and caramel malt are not far behind, though, after I take a larger sniff. Nearly opaque black, this beer lets some dark brown light through at the very bottom of the glass. Rich milk chocolate and roasted malt blend well with the bourbon notes to yield a warm and inviting sipper. The body is medium-full, with the bourbon lightening things a bit; the carbonation is low.
A longer, nose-filling sniff exposes light milk sweetness (lactose) and medium dark fruits of plums, raisins and figs. The creamy tan head is about 1/2” and sticks around for the finale, while leaving a light lacing on the glass. Light alcohol warmth scratches the back of my throat slightly, just enough to remind me of its heft. Malt dominates with essentially no hop aroma, flavor and only slight bitterness. Lingering milk chocolate and bourbon finish out my experience.
Pair this with a gooey warm brownie and a dollop of whipped cream by the fireside.
