Description

A deep Double IPA filled to the brim with a clever combo of tropical hops, resulting in big notes of pineapple, mango, and grapefruit with an ever so delicate waft of dankness on the back end. A sturdy body with a dash of oats for complexity and an even-keeled finish verging on dryness.

SoGnar Double IPA by Gnarly Barley Brewing Co. is being evaluated as a Hazy IPA (Category 21C) from the 2021 BJCP Style Guidelines.

SoGnar Double IPA pours a fairly hazy gold with a fine, creamy white head that lingers and helps create an overall inviting appearance. The aroma features a prominent tropical hop character of pineapple and mango that is fresh and bright, with a background kick of grapefruit zest and resin. A light bready, nutty maltiness develops behind the hops along with a light spicy alcohol. There are no fermentation esters noted behind the hops. The flavor follows with prominent ripe pineapple and mango hops and a light bready malt that emerges mid-palate along with a moderate hop bitterness that is pleasant and balancing. The light alcohol warming is smooth and appropriate for this style. A medium-full body and moderately low carbonation rounds out this beer.

This is an easy-drinking and well-brewed hazy double IPA. The overall hop character is tropical, fresh and bright, and works well with the background malt and smooth hop bitterness. This will be a great sipper as we transition out of winter into the warmer months ahead.
