The best of The Beer Connoisseur® magazine's Official Review in 2022, including an impressive 13 World Class-rated beers with one of only five 99-rated beers in our history.

Each year, we collect the highest-scoring beers evaluated in the Official Review and combine them into a list of the finest examples. 2022 showcased a bevy of tremendous brews and we’ve collected the best examples for you to peruse.
2022 marked the first time the Beer Judge Certification Program listed hazy IPA as an official style. Finally, the most popular style in the craft beer sphere is an official BJCP beer style. As expected, this style (and IPAs generally) continued their omnipresence on store shelves and in beer fridges around the country – as well as on this list.
This issue’s Top 100 Beers story features the largest number of World Class beers in our magazine’s history with a staggering 13 beers scoring higher than a 96 in the Official Review.
A wide range of styles can be found on this list, including multiple top-tier international pale lagers, plenty of barrel-aged pastry stouts and even a few World Class-rated lambic offerings. These are just a few of the myriad beer styles found within, so read on to explore the Top 100 Beers of 2022. Cheers!
ABOUT THE OFFICIAL REVIEW
The Official Review is conducted in a single-blind tasting format that adheres to the Beer Judge Certification Program 2021 Style Guidelines. This method provides the best opportunity to rely on facts and to avoid favoritism, ensuring a level playing field for all brewers. It serves both the industry and the consumer to have unbiased and objective scores from qualified experts.
In effort to provide the most credible evaluations, The Beer Connoisseur hand-selects judges with a minimum BJCP ranking of “National” or Master Cicerone®. Judges are required to work with an assistant that handles beer prior to evaluation, and breweries are not allowed to solicit judges directly.
In the single-blind tasting format, judges are presented with a chilled, properly poured beer and given its style category. Scoring is then done on the following basis using a 100-point scale: Aroma (24 points), Appearance (6 points), Flavor (40 points), Mouthfeel (10 points) and Overall Impression (20 points).
The score breakdown is as follows:
100 to 96: World Class – You need this beer in your life.
95 to 91: Exceptional – Don’t hesitate.
90 to 86: Very Good – A brew to savor.
85 to 75: Average – Somewhat unimpressive.
74 and below: Not Recommended – Just walk away.

I came up with this one.
What sets this beer apart from other examples within the style?
The base beer was already impeccable, and then we acquired some super-fresh Basil Hayden barrels to age it in. I really think those special barrels added an incredible dimension to the beer.
What makes this beer truly World Class?
The balance of the beer itself and having every element present and not overpowering really takes this beer to another level. Every time I sip on one of these there’s nothing I’m left wanting for.
What is your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, mouthfeel, etc.)?
The mouthfeel for sure. The amount of oats in the recipe really creates a creamy and mouth-coating fullness.
How popular is this beer among your faithful fans?
We had a fantastic turnout for this release, and it is still requested frequently. This is definitely a beer that is warmly welcomed in our lineup.

Who was responsible for this beer’s recipe?
I was responsible for this recipe. Hefeweizen was the first style of beer that really got me into brewing and, ever since then, I have been brewing it as often as I can. It was the first beer we ever brewed on our system at Miel and we are still making it four years later!
What sets this beer apart from other examples within the style?
Hefeweizen as a style was always described as “bread in a glass,” and that is what I try to emulate with this recipe. My focus is on pulling a soft body from the wheat without it going toward the acidic side that wheat can sometimes have. A soft water profile and minimal hopping help keep this beer from getting too dry on the palate as well.
What makes this beer truly World Class?
From start to finish, this beer is perfectly balanced between the wheat and the yeast profile. Each sip really shows how complex a hefeweizen can be without all the flavors ever stepping on each other.
What is your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, mouthfeel, etc.)?
The mouthfeel is what makes this beer a winner for me. It’s soft on the palate and carries no lingering bitterness throughout the finish. The banana and clove that this style is known for is so subtly balanced that it never overpowers the grain bill. It’s hard for me to have just one after a hot day in the brewhouse.
How popular is this beer among your faithful fans?
It is definitely the go-to beer for plenty of our regulars in the taproom, and the cans never stick around for too long in our cooler!

Who was responsible for this beer’s recipe?
This one came from Steve Wagner, Stone’s co-founder and original brewmaster.
What sets this beer apart from other examples within the style?
At the time there were very few examples within this style. Stone IPA helped pave the way for the West Coast IPA Category. It was early to the scene and was among the first to be distributed to states outside of California, helping others to discover the style. That was 25 years ago! We have seen a lot of evolution in the IPA space since then, including different types of IPA being produced; i.e. double, triple, hazy, brut, cold, etc. Everything seems to come full circle as we see people, once again, discovering and/or gravitating towards West Coast IPAs once again. Stone IPA is still very much relevant (and tastes amazing) after all these years.
What makes this beer truly World Class?
It’s trailblazing history. There weren’t that many hoppy beers with this kind of bitterness out there 25 years ago. We fell in love with Centennial hops, which play an important role in this beer. It’s a great balance of malt and hops and that bitter back end that makes you want to drink more. We’ve always loved this beer just the way it was, but we continued to experiment with different hops in trials and in other beers and at one point decided to take on the challenge to see if we could make Stone IPA even better. At Stone we have never been satisfied sitting still and are always trying to improve and get better. We’ve done that over the years just in the way we brew and process beer. We did finally make a change to Stone IPA a few years back. Centennial is still the star hop, but we added a few other varieties to bring out the tropical component more. We liked it better, so we went with it. It’s not a huge change but enough to really round out the beer and make it pop even more.
What is your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, mouthfeel, etc.)?
It’s still the beer a lot of us go back to because it’s so damn good. For me it’s the balance of citrus and resin/dank and that subtle tropical component that makes it so much fun to drink. Did I mention that I love the bitterness?
How popular is this beer among your faithful fans?
Stone IPA is still our #1-selling beer, 25 years later.

Who was responsible for this beer’s recipe?
That would be me!
What sets this beer apart from other examples within the style?
The balance really sets this beer apart. There’s a rich malt complexity but enough hop bitterness to not have it finish sweet compared to other versions I’ve had.
What makes this beer truly World Class?
Simply put, I believe this beer hits all the marks. After sitting down with this brew, I can’t find much to complain about. I’ve had many examples of the style and I can say it hangs in there with the very best versions.
What is your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, mouthfeel, etc.)?
I love how smooth this beer is. The malt character and alcohol blend together perfectly. It’s really hard to believe this beer clocks in at a hefty 14% ABV.
How popular is this beer among your faithful fans?
When we released this beer, we weren’t sure what to expect in terms of the reception, but people really fell in love with it. We plan to drop a barrel-aged version alongside the original for the next release.

This one was mine.
What sets this beer apart from other examples within the style?
In today’s marketplace that contains so many interpretations of IPA as a style, this one is truly a classic: a big, bold American IPA that is clean and clear in character.
What makes this beer truly World Class?
It’s a well-balanced beer. It’s big, brash, bold, bitter and beautifully balanced.
What is your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, mouthfeel, etc.)?
The fact that it uses classic Cascade hops as part of the blend, which is a great representation of the American IPA category. Overall, it’s a huge beer – it’s one of our highest-hopped beer recipes, and yet still sweet because of its malt build. It’s remarkably drinkable at 8.7% ABV.
How popular is this beer among your faithful fans?
It’s one of the original Lawson’s Finest Liquids beers that fans continue to ask for. It’s top of the list for any classic IPA drinker.

Who was responsible for this beer’s recipe?
Anthony R. Martin, grandson of Timmermans founder John Martin and current CEO of Timmermans.
The story is already almost legendary. When John Martin arrived in Antwerp in 1909 to launch the famous Guinness and a range of English beers. He didn’t suspect that 110 years later, his grandson Anthony would settle in Belgium to develop and promote Belgian craft beers.
What sets this beer apart from other examples within the style?
Timmermans Framboise Lambicus is made by adding 100% natural raspberry juice to our lambic. After a period of maturation in oak barrels, the beer turns a delicate shade of pink that is sure to delight you. This is a beer to be sampled with finesse and elegance.
What makes this beer truly World Class?
Timmermans Framboise Lambicus is an authentic lambic with raspberries. A nice balance between the fruity notes of the raspberries and the subtle acidity of a young lambic from the world’s oldest lambic brewery. After a year of aging the lambic in oak barrels, 100% natural raspberry juice is added to it. The beer nose at first surprised with its liveliness, and its slight tart edge fades quickly. The beer takes on a delicate pink color that is sure to delight you. The aroma is reminiscent of freshly cut wheat, enhanced by spicy notes. Timmermans Framboise Lambicus is a beer that is best to sample ice cold with finesse and elegance. This young and frisky beer evokes both the typical flavors of a lambic beer as well as the aromas experienced when picking raspberries.
What is your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, mouthfeel, etc.)?
Our Framboise faithfully reflects the color and flavor of ripe raspberries with no trace of the acidity of lambic. In the mouthfeel, there is a pleasant liveliness due to the freshness of the raspberries with a final very subtle fruit flavor. This wonderful flavor reaches its peak in its intensely fresh aftertaste.
How popular is this beer among your faithful fans?
Timmermans Framboise Lambicus is a top-five Timmermans beer. It is a special creation, and its flavor cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

Who was responsible for this beer’s recipe?
Steve Wagner, Stone Brewing’s co-founder and original brewmaster. Co-Founder Greg Koch gets credit on this one as well. The recipe was actually a mistake. They made a miscalculation of malt and hops and knew pretty quickly that it wasn’t the beer they’d intended to brew. Steve was ready to toss it all when Greg Koch suggested they give it a chance. It turned out to be a very welcome mistake!
What sets this beer apart from other examples within the style?
What is the style? American strong ale? It’s not a red ale. It’s not an IPA. It’s not a pale ale. It doesn’t really fit that well into any beer style category. When I first started at Stone, this beer blew my mind. I didn’t know what it was and had never had anything like it. It was malty, bitter, hoppy and higher-ABV. All I knew was that I loved it, and it was just about the only beer I drank for that first year because I couldn’t wrap my head around it. I had one last week as I do from time to time. It still blows my mind.
What makes this beer truly World Class?
It’s truly an original, unique beer. Add in the creative marketing of it (“Hated By Many. Loved By Few.”) and you have an absolute home run. Greg and Steve figured they would sell through that original “mistake” batch and be done with it. It sold out in the blink of an eye and there was passionate feedback from people who did love it (and there were people who hated it). Arrogant Bastard Ale was born.
What is your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, mouthfeel, etc.)?
It’s malty, hoppy, bitter and has a nice ABV level. Full body and, yes, you can have more than one (but be careful).
How popular is this beer among your faithful fans?
Arrogant Bastard Ale still has an incredibly loyal following. We have been brewing Arrogant Bastard Ale for 26 years with no end in sight.

Who was responsible for this beer’s recipe?
My father, Franz-Joseph Göller, finalized this recipe in 1978. He designed the Göller Dunkel to commemorate the 650th anniversary of our town, Zeil am Main. It was an immediate success in our village, and so we have continued to brew it to this day.
What sets this beer apart from other examples within the style?
Many other examples of the Munich dunkel I find to be overly bitter. The roasting of the Munich malts has to be done just right to avoid the bitterness. It is one of our great successes that we have found the balance with a smooth and drinkable beer, while still having the rich notes of caramel, coffee and chocolate. Honestly, this combination is not easy to achieve, but we have perfected the malting process over many years. We can now say with confidence that our dunkel is probably the most drinkable example of this style that you will find on the market.
What makes this beer truly World Class?
Our Dunkel has a full-bodied and malty taste. It has a sweetness but is not cloying. As I said already, some dunkels tend to be overly bitter, but it is also true that others are too sweet. The Göller Dunkel’s sweetness does not overpower, and even fades to a gently bitter note at the end. After enjoying a sip, you always want to take another. This is how you recognize a good beer in Germany.
What is your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, mouthfeel, etc.)?
My favorite thing about our dunkel is its versatility. The combination of full body and drinkability means it pairs well with many types of food. The roasty notes complement grilled meats, dark bread and even a chocolate dessert. As a standalone, it’s just as easy to drink several in a row.
How popular is this beer among your faithful fans?
It is actually one of the most popular beers in the area. In our region of Franconia, you can find the Göller Dunkel at every grocery store within 50 kilometers of the brewery. The majority of our sales are local.

Who was responsible for this beer’s recipe?
I wrote this one.
What sets this beer apart from other examples within the style?
Unfortunately there aren’t many examples of this style, and far fewer domestically brewed examples at that. I looked to the world-class English classics for inspiration and studied the style guidelines closely. We were not looking to necessarily create something that stood out, per se, but rather create something that definitively met all of the style criteria.
What makes this beer truly World Class?
This is the perfect middle ground between the sessionability and approachability of a strong bitter and the complexity and warmth of a barleywine. The aspects that make this beer truly wonderful are the seamless blend between malt, hops and yeast character. It is difficult to distinguish where each flavor profile ends and the next begins.
What is your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, mouthfeel, etc.)?
Lost the Plot has a lovely fruitcake aroma and flavor that is attributed to the sweet and fruity maltiness, esters from the yeast and a touch of earthy spiciness from hops. As mentioned earlier, the strength also makes this something worth savoring, but you won’t be discouraged from having another.
How popular is this beer among your faithful fans?
This was a limited, taproom-only release and we have only had it on once (so far), but feedback from our patrons was overwhelmingly positive. The timing of this release was also perfect to share this in a cask beer engine at our anniversary party in the spring.

Who was responsible for this beer’s recipe?
I came up with this one with help from the brewing team.
What sets this beer apart from other examples within the style?
The use of multiple grapefruit sources – dried peel, puree and zest. We use the whole fruit in different ways throughout the brewing process.
What makes this beer truly World Class?
Double Sunshine (the base beer) is one of our most beloved brands. The Ruby Red Grapefruit variation has a strong depth of grapefruit flavor, while maintaining the tie to the original flavor of Double Sunshine.
What is your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, mouthfeel, etc.)?
Capturing the whole essence of a fruit that I very much enjoy eating. The aroma hits you right off the bat followed by a full-bodied, full-flavored and unapologetic 8% ABV drinking experience.
How popular is this beer among your faithful fans?
It’s been hugely popular. We’ve released it in limited fashion in the last two years and it’s one of the most sought after and highest selling of our limited items, even when we launch it during the winter months.

Who was responsible for this beer’s recipe?
This beer has been a team effort to build over the last couple of years, but our Lead Blender, Kyle Krause, has been leading the charge on the nuance of this beer.
What sets this beer apart from other examples within the style?
We want this beer to give a nod towards the pastry stout realm, but it is important to us that it still drinks like a beer and is not too cloying or sweet. We also work with our local spice importer Arome in Hood River, Oregon to get super-fresh spices and dried peppers for this beer.
What makes this beer truly World Class?
Like all of our beers at pFriem we dedicate time, attention, continuous improvement and quality to make sure that we are creating the beers we want to make as well as what the beer drinker deserves.
What is your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, mouthfeel, etc.)?
The combination of fresh spice, heat and a creamy mouthfeel makes this beer a special experience.
How popular is this beer among your faithful fans?
It has a strong following when we release it in late fall/winter!

What sets this beer apart from other examples within the style?
Timmermans Lambicus Blanche is like no other beer in its style and category. It’s a unique and perfect combination of our delicious lambic, freshly brewed in the oldest lambic brewery in the world, and our malted wheat beer. By adding spices such as coriander and dried orange zest, a light and fruity beer is created. It is subtly spicy and deliberately fresh with its appealing light gold color and beautiful white head. Should ideally be drunk from an authentic stoneware pot.
What makes this beer truly World Class?
There is no other beer like Timmermans Lambicus Blanche anywhere in the world because it is the only white Lambic beer. The Lambicus Blanche is unique. It is a blend of lambic and malted wheat beer, to which spices such as coriander and dried orange peel have been added. Its light acidity balances perfectly with its fruity notes, which gives the perfect introduction to the world of lambic beer. It is a refreshing, perfumy beer that gives an impression of freshly cut wheat giving way to spicy aromas.
What is your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, mouthfeel, etc.)?
An unconventional blanche brewed as it was once in the farms of the Payotteland, with wheat added to a lambic. Its flavor is slightly tart and fairly rounded with a hint of orange peel, excellent as a thirst-quencher. A light acidity adds to a final fruity and refreshing taste and a typical lambic flavor. It’s the perfect balance between citrus, spiciness and acidity that makes this beer so refreshing.

This beer is firmly in the top-five of preferred beers within the brand. Its uniqueness gives consumers a fantastic and tasteful experience that no other beer can offer.

Who was responsible for this beer’s recipe?
I built this recipe with the help of my brewing team. We analyzed some of our stout recipes that have held up well in barrels, and we built a new recipe just for this series. The base recipe already had some cherry and dark fruit notes and when combined with some time in a cherry brandy barrel, the beer is absolutely delicious.
What sets this beer apart from other examples within the style?
I’m proud of the fact that all the cherry and vanilla flavors came from the barrel, we didn’t add any additional adjuncts pre- or post-barrel aging. There is a purity to this beer that makes it unique.
What makes this beer truly World Class?
I think this beer is perfectly balanced, thanks to a lower hop character and a rich and complex malt bill. We let the barrels do the work for us in the Lone Buffalo series and try to make a base beer that complements the oak and cherry.
What is your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, mouthfeel, etc.)?
I love the flavor – incredibly rich chocolate cherry flavors meld with touches of oak and vanilla.
How popular is this beer among your faithful fans?
Our Lone Buffalo series of barrel-aged stouts has become very popular, but this has definitely been one of the fastest-selling versions that we have made to date.
