Flying Dog Wins Battle For Raging Bitch

Flying Dog Brewery has won a six-year long legal dogfight with Michigan’s Liquor Control Commission, culminating in a decision holding the Commission accountable for violating the brewery’s First Amendment rights.

In 2009, Flying Dog filed to register the Raging Bitch Belgian-Style IPA in Michigan. Not expecting any controversy, the Frederick-based brewery had begun shipping their brew to Michigan.

Maine Full Pint Bill Passes First Round

A Maine bill seeking to ensure beers advertised as pints are a full 16 ounces has passed its first round of votes in the Maine Legislature’s Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee.

The bill sponsored by Democratic Senator John Patrick, which passed 12-2, will crack down on bars and restaurants that advertise pints but serve them in 14 ounce glasses.

“It’s like truth in advertising,” Patrick told the Portland Press Herald. “As with any other standardized thing, if you buy something of a specific measure, you expect to get that much.”

"Oscar" Worthy Coffee

New Belgium is in Atlanta for Secret Stash and Argosy hosted a flight of sours. Was the word flight ever more appropriate? The single barrel “Oscar,” the sourcing for La Folie, the 2014 La Folie, a Leopold (Oscar aged in Blackberry Whiskey barrels from Leopold Bros), and "Oscar" Worthy Coffee sent taste buds and spirits soaring.

Hal Doss, a native of Rome, Georgia and a brewer who literally worked his way up from the New Belgium cellar, was on hand to talk about sours. He’ll be at the Square Pub in Decatur tonight with an apple Leopold and NB seasonals on tap.

Smitten

As we spring forward this weekend adjusting our sleep schedules and daily routines, our food and drink palates tend to change as well. It could be the birds chirping in the dawn or the premature pollen in the air, but I'm stoked when I smell fresh grass and morning dew. I then suddenly notice myself craving beers with resiny hops and earthy character so why shouldn't I give this Golden Rye Ale a try?
