We spoke with Mother's Brewing Co. Head Brewer David Soper about Materfamilias.

BC: Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
The recipe, or recipes for that matter are an ongoing expression of the best imperial stouts we can make and or exploration into what beers work best in what types of barrels. At this point we have two main recipes that we brew and age in a variety of barrels. The final blend is the culmination of the best parts of what we find when we taste these barrels.

BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
The part of this beer, and really any blended barrel aged beer for that matter, that I find to be truly remarkable is the transformative quality that the barrels have on the liquid we put in them. The base beer goes in tasting one way, but it is only a shadow of what the beer becomes after it's time spent aging over 11 months in 4 different types of barrels. Most notably though I am always struck by how much the beer is transformed when we begin blending. Each barrel has its own unique character, but that character rarely reflects the finished product. We have found over time that individual barrels almost never taste like the finished blend, and when we put barrels together, that have overwhelmingly positive characteristics we end up with a product whose whole is much greater than the sum of its parts.

We spoke with Urban South Brewery Head Brewer Alex Flores about Holy Roller.

BC: Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
This beer has been an evolution since the day we opened the brewery. We are always looking for ways to improve our products and this has been a complete team effort to fine tune one of our top-selling beers.

BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
I love the balance we have struck with this beer, beautiful esters and a depth of hop flavor; this beer has a lot of flavor but finishes crisp with just a touch of sweetness.

BC: Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less?
Hoppy and refined. Bold and Balanced.

BC: What's a good food pairing for this beer?
This beer pairs really well with spicy foods; we are drinking it with boiled crawfish!

Monday Night Brewing Head Brewer Ryan Cooley Talks Currant Events

We spoke with Monday Night Brewing Head Brewer Ryan Cooley about Currant Events.

BC: Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
I came up with this recipe.

BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
To me, this is such an easy-drinking, approachable sour beer. I think it works well for people who are just getting into sour beers and want to try something a little more out there - but also a super solid tart sour for those experienced drinkers too. But honestly, pour some into a glass and look at that super awesome cherry-like head that comes with it.

BC: Where does this beer’s name come from?
We like to do a lot of wordplay in naming our beers (in case you haven’t noticed). Using black currants, we started riffing, and came up with Currant Events.

BC: Is this your “desert island beer?”
This is such a tasty beer, and it’s pretty low in ABV, so I could knock back 10 of them and the day wouldn’t be so bad.

BC: Do you know a story – or have a personal story – that revolves around this beer?
I was just playing around with fruit flavors and what I thought would pair the best with a tart sour base. Finally decided that boysenberry and black currants would pair really well together. We were stoked about the result, and the color of the beer is killer.

We spoke with Monday Night Brewing Head Brewer Ryan Cooley about Cardigans of the Galaxy.

BC: Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
I’m not one to brag, but this one was mine.

BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
Cardigans has such a big hop nose, but it also plays well into the fact that it is so easy to drink. It's also a tribute to the old school IPAs - it's super clear and finishes really dry and clean. That makes the hops come through even more.

BC: Where does this beer’s name come from?
I let our marketing department take that job. The movie, of course, was a big hit when we were throwing around names. And it has Galaxy hops in it.

BC: Is this your “desert island beer?”
I wish I could say yes, but I’d rather have a raft and maybe a volleyball to talk too.
