Dan Preston

Dan Preston's picture
Beer Judge

Dan discovered craft beer his junior year of college and never looked back. After a few years of brewery tours and tastings, he finally dove into homebrewing in 2009 when a work colleague was giving up the hobby. Shortly after, he joined one of the oldest club’s in the nation (Boston Wort Processors) and quickly got into judging beer and was a National-ranked BJCP judge by 2013. As an officer of the Worts since 2011, Dan has assisted in organizing several AHA/BJCP competitions as well as trying to promote beer education and experimentation. While he appreciates and makes all beer styles, Dan’s favorites are of the hoppy or sour variety, and has even had great luck combining the two.

If you like sour flavors, this beer is for you. However, if you like complexity in your sour beers, you’ll find this beer wanting. It pours a deep coral color that's reminiscent of a rosé wine. Its very spritzy, with a low, fast-fading head. The aroma is sweet cherry at the front followed by a... Read More

This beer pours a deep golden color like orange blossom honey or a sunbeam. It has a faint haze and a lasting off-white head. The aroma is very citra-esque with lots of tropical fruit notes- passionfruit, guava, pineapple – orange, some lemongrass, but also a bit catty. Beyond the hops there is... Read More

Vienna Lager by Double Nickel Brewing Co. is a Vienna Lager and will be judged as such by BJCP 2015 category 7A.

This style is one of my favorites, but is one you rarely find, so it is great to see a U.S. brewer making one. The style is the lesser-known cousin of the Oktoberfest/Marzen... Read More

Cape May Oktoberfest by Cape May Brewing Co. is a Marzen, which falls under BJCP category 6A. The aroma is malt forward with a moderately grainy... Read More

Rollin Deeper by Wild Leap Brew Co. is an Imperial Stout (BJCP category 20C), however due to the addition of vanilla & cinnamon it shifts to Spice, Herb & Vegetable Beer (BJCP Category 30A).
