Dan Preston

Dan Preston's picture
Beer Judge

Dan discovered craft beer his junior year of college and never looked back. After a few years of brewery tours and tastings, he finally dove into homebrewing in 2009 when a work colleague was giving up the hobby. Shortly after, he joined one of the oldest club’s in the nation (Boston Wort Processors) and quickly got into judging beer and was a National-ranked BJCP judge by 2013. As an officer of the Worts since 2011, Dan has assisted in organizing several AHA/BJCP competitions as well as trying to promote beer education and experimentation. While he appreciates and makes all beer styles, Dan’s favorites are of the hoppy or sour variety, and has even had great luck combining the two.

Dank, dankity, dank -- that's how I would describe this lush Double IPA. Resin, pine and grapefruit rind aromas pour out of the glass with hints of mango and citrus. It seems as if Chinook and Simcoe hops had a love child. Beneath all the hops is a light, grainy, crisp malt with a little more... Read More

Brighter Future by Monkey Wrench Brewing is a NEIPA that falls under style BJCP 2021 category 21C (Hazy IPA). This variant of the style is tropical/fruit heavy with a softer bitterness than the standard American IPA (BJCP 21A) and is known for its hazy appearance from... Read More

This beer pours a deep amber with copper hues, brilliant clarity and a long-lasting, off-white head. The aroma is fairly mild, but what is there is pretty balanced between the malt and hops with toast, mild caramel and a grainy character along with some earthy hops. The flavor, on the other hand... Read More

MC2 by Equilibrium Brewery is a DIPA, but is very much in the NEIPA style, so it is better suited to BJCP 2015 category 21B (Specialty IPA), versus the typical double IPA style (BJCP 2015 Category 22A). As such, this beer should be all about the hops, and it certainly fits the bill.

Collision Stout by Holy City Brewing is a stout that is bourbon barrel aged, which puts it under BJCP 2015 category 33B Specialty Wood-Aged Beer. It falls into the Specialty version due to the bourbon characteristics, which are definitely evident. This beer pours a beautiful jet black that is... Read More

Hop Science by Baxter Brewing Co. is an IPA, but of the New England style so it will be judged under BJCP 2015 category 21B as Specialty IPA. This beer pours a deep straw color with a nearly opaque level of haze as well as a bright white head that clings to the glass. The aroma is a citrusy... Read More
