Dan Preston

Dan Preston's picture
Beer Judge

Dan discovered craft beer his junior year of college and never looked back. After a few years of brewery tours and tastings, he finally dove into homebrewing in 2009 when a work colleague was giving up the hobby. Shortly after, he joined one of the oldest club’s in the nation (Boston Wort Processors) and quickly got into judging beer and was a National-ranked BJCP judge by 2013. As an officer of the Worts since 2011, Dan has assisted in organizing several AHA/BJCP competitions as well as trying to promote beer education and experimentation. While he appreciates and makes all beer styles, Dan’s favorites are of the hoppy or sour variety, and has even had great luck combining the two.

This session IPA pours a deep golden color with an orange hue, huge dense white head and great clarity. The aroma is full of sweet fruit (apricot, peach, melon) and floral hop notes. There’s actually a decent amount of malt to the aroma for style with some doughy, bready malt and a little bit of... Read More

Lucky Scars IPA by Currahee Brewing Co. is an American IPA and will be judged as such by BJCP 2015 category 21A. Modest Maiden Marzen by Big Boss Brewing Co. is a Marzen (BJCP 2015 6A), but due to the use of smoked peachwood it falls under BJCP 2015 guidelines for Classic Style Smoked Beer 32A. This beer pours a brilliant clear deep golden color with some hints of copper and an off-white head that clings... Read More

Smallmouth Low-Cal IPA by Wallenpaupack Brewing Co. is an IPA (BJCP category 21A), but due to its small size it falls into the Specialty IPA subcategory (21B). Beyond being a session IPA, it’s also a low-cal IPA, which takes some extra work as it is about 20% lower calories than what a standard... Read More
