Beer Judge

Dan discovered craft beer his junior year of college and never looked back. After a few years of brewery tours and tastings, he finally dove into homebrewing in 2009 when a work colleague was giving up the hobby. Shortly after, he joined one of the oldest club’s in the nation (Boston Wort Processors) and quickly got into judging beer and was a National-ranked BJCP judge by 2013. As an officer of the Worts since 2011, Dan has assisted in organizing several AHA/BJCP competitions as well as trying to promote beer education and experimentation. While he appreciates and makes all beer styles, Dan’s favorites are of the hoppy or sour variety, and has even had great luck combining the two.

I’m not sure when most pumpkin beers became straight spice beers, but I wish they’d be as they sound: A beer with some actual pumpkin in it. This pumpkin porter unquestionably... Read More

This beer pours a light golden color with good clarity, just a bit of haze and a dense white head that lasts and lasts. The aroma seemed fairly mild for a DIPA and lacked the pungency expected. There was a light grainy/doughy malt and still plenty of hops to it, but moreso onion, garlic, herbal... Read More

Truck Chaser Bomb Pop Double IPA by Wild Leap Brew Co. is a Double IPA but falls under BJCP category 21B as a specialty IPA. It lands here instead as it is more of a milkshake IPA than a traditional DIPA. The milkshake IPA is a newer subset of the New England IPA style, using lactose to give it... Read More

Alpha Abstraction Vol. 7 by Wild Leap Brew Co. is a Double IPA, which falls under BJCP category 22A but is more of an Imperial New England IPA due so will be judged under BJCP 21B Specialty IPA instead. Together We Ryes by Wallenpaupack Brewing Co. is a Belgian Rye Ale, which would fall into Alternative Grain Beer (BJCP 2015 Category 31A) due to the use of rye, with the base style probably falling closest to Belgian Pale Ale (24B). It pours a deep yellow color, approaching golden, with a bubbly... Read More
