Beer Judge

Dan discovered craft beer his junior year of college and never looked back. After a few years of brewery tours and tastings, he finally dove into homebrewing in 2009 when a work colleague was giving up the hobby. Shortly after, he joined one of the oldest club’s in the nation (Boston Wort Processors) and quickly got into judging beer and was a National-ranked BJCP judge by 2013. As an officer of the Worts since 2011, Dan has assisted in organizing several AHA/BJCP competitions as well as trying to promote beer education and experimentation. While he appreciates and makes all beer styles, Dan’s favorites are of the hoppy or sour variety, and has even had great luck combining the two.

If you like sour flavors, this beer is for you. However, if you like complexity in your sour beers, you’ll find this beer wanting. It pours a deep coral color that's reminiscent of a rosé wine. Its very spritzy, with a low, fast-fading head. The aroma is sweet cherry at the front followed by a... Read More

Madam Basil by Holy City Brewing is a Saison, but due to the addition of basil will be judged as a Spice, Herb, Vegetable Beer under BJCP 2015 category 30A with a base of Saison (category 25B). The difficulty in this SHV style is layering the SHV element such that it complements the style while... Read More

This beer pours a golden straw-like color with brilliant clarity and a fluffy white head that lasts. The aroma is yeast-forward with spicy notes, peppercorns, cloves, hay and lemon zest. It follows through with a touch of grassy, earthy hops, honey-like pilsner malt sweetness and a tinge of... Read More

Probably the most similar to the original King of Hop DIPA. The aroma is mostly tropical/citrusy hops with a tinge of spicy heat. The flavor is similar with tropical/citrus hops, then followed by peppery spice that lingers. The heat builds on the lips and palate and becomes even more exaggerated... Read More

This beer pours a beautiful deep golden color with a light amber hue, great clarity and a low, off-white head. A pungent nose emanates from the glass, but it’s the imperial part of this Triple IPA that is most prominent. It screams of high alcohol throughout and drowns out the majority of the... Read More

Belgian Golden by Double Nickel Brewing Co. is a Belgian Golden Strong Ale and will be judged as such by BJCP 2015 guideline 25C.

This beer pours a deep golden color with an orange hue, a big fluffy white head that lasts forever, great clarity and lots of tiny bubbles. Despite the look of... Read More
