John C. Tull's picture
Beer Judge

John Tull began making beer for himself and his friends in 1994 just prior to moving to Utah to begin graduate school. While working on his Ph.D. in Reno, Nevada, John became interested in judging beer, mead and cider through his friends and colleagues in the Washoe Zephyr Zymurgists, a homebrew club with strong and early representation in the Beer Judge Certification Program. He took the BJCP exam in 2001 and gradually has risen to the rank of Grand Master I. John has judged in more than 50 beer competitions and organized eight, including the AHA National Homebrew Competition final round in 2009. Outside of his life as a beer judge, John is a wildlife ecologist focused on conservation of fragile desert landscapes and the wildlife that live there. He and his wife Marlene have two wonderful daughters and a French Brittany named Jaca.

Floral hops, light fruit esters and some caramel malt aromas can all be found in the aroma of this beer. Otherwise, it has a very clean nose. The color is a dark copper with exceptional clarity. A nice off-white head of fine bubbles gathers at the top and sides of the glass. Rich caramel malts,... Read More

This Belgian Specialty Ale presents an aroma of mild acidity and a raspberry-like fruit and pith character. The fruit esters contribute more to the definition of the aroma than does the wild ferment. A dark copper color with light ruby highlights can be seen when placed in the light. A thin, off... Read More

This beer was judged as an American IPA (21A). This beer has a caramel malt, very light citrus, and mild tropical fruit in the aroma. There are also hints of alcohol aromas as well. It’s color is golden to pale copper, very clear with an off-white head that lingers. The hops dominate the flavor... Read More

Oak Barrel Aged Flanders Red Ale by Moody Tongue Brewing Co. was judged as a Flanders Red Ale (23B). Notes of acetic acid linger on a bed of cherry fruit with hints of wood and leather. The acidity is restrained, but unmistakable. The color is a dark copper-garnet, very clear with just a faint... Read More

Description

This New England style IPA is as delicious as it is hazy with a juicy, full mouthfeel. Tons of citrus and tropical flavor and aroma dominate this beer thanks to copious amounts of Simcoe, Citra, El Dorado, Amarillo, and Mosaic hops added in the whirlpool and then again during active fermentation. Low bitterness and a sessionable ABV means you can kick back and enjoy more than one!

7B Hazy IPA by Laughing Dog Brewing is a Hazy IPA and is judged as Specialty IPA: New England IPA (21B). An aroma of citrus wafts out and into the nose, pleasantly combining with malt sweetness with a hint of a fresh bread and mild yeast character. After the initial release of citrus, some... Read More

The aroma is intensely roasty and backed by a huge coffee smell. Vegetable and unroasted coffee aromatics indicate that there may be an infusion of green coffee beans in this beer. Chocolate nibs come through after a little warming in the glass. The color is nearly black, very much opaque, and... Read More
