Beer Judge

John Tull began making beer for himself and his friends in 1994 just prior to moving to Utah to begin graduate school. While working on his Ph.D. in Reno, Nevada, John became interested in judging beer, mead and cider through his friends and colleagues in the Washoe Zephyr Zymurgists, a homebrew club with strong representation in the Beer Judge Certification Program. He took the BJCP exam in 2001 and rose to the rank of Master beer judge three years later. Over the past 14 years, John has judged in nearly 50 beer competitions and organized eight, including the AHA National Homebrew Competition final round in 2009. Outside of his life as a beer judge, John is a wildlife ecologist focused on conservation of fragile desert landscapes and the wildlife that live there. He and his wife Marlene are raising two wonderful daughters and a dog named Jaca.

Lemon Zest Farmhouse Ale by pFriem Family Brewers was judged as a Fruit and Spice Beer (29B). The base style is a Saison (25B). The typical earthy aromas often found in a Saison are present in this beer. Some wheat malt sweetness is backed by a mild fruitiness. Despite the lemon zest... Read More

The aroma of this beer is quite clean with notes of grainy malt and noble hops (herbal and earthy). The color is a light straw, exceptionally bright, with a white head that persists as a thin layer over most of the surface. The flavor is led with a grainy malt that is somewhat cracker-like; ... The aroma is intensely roasty and backed by a huge coffee smell. Vegetable and unroasted coffee aromatics indicate that there may be an infusion of green coffee beans in this beer. Chocolate nibs come through after a little warming in the glass. The color is nearly black, very much opaque, and... Read More

Some dark malt character (subtle roast, some breadiness) backed by chocolate comes through in the nose. There is a suggestion of an earthy/herbal hop aroma, but it's very light. It has a dark brown color that is nearly opaque, though garnet highlights come through when held to a bright light... Read More

An earthy, somewhat resinous, woody aroma mingles with hints of medium-dark, toasty malts and some yeastiness in this beer. Light esters can also be found, although they are subtle and non-distinct. The color is medium amber, although clouded by significant yeast that apparently did not result... Read More

A big bready, wheat-like, sweet aroma backed by vanilla from the barrels and light cherry and apricot esters is found in the nose. There is some haze in an otherwise pale copper liquid with firm, small tan bubbles hugging the edge of the glass. The flavor is bold with substantial alcohol... Read More
